Old Testament historyWhat is the nature of the history contained in the Old Testament, in particular the so-called historical books? Should the kingdom of David and Solomon, the United Monarchy, be regarded as historically real or largely mythical? What is the evidence from archaeology? On the other hand, it may not matter much whether the historical accounts are true - but why would an atheist want to read the Bible at all? New TestamentHistorically the situation in the New Testament is much clearer. It is almost certain that Jesus of Nazareth lived and taught in first-century Palestine. But what exactly did he say and who did he claim to be? This debate is as active as ever. For Christians, Jesus is actually God - and therefore identical with the Yahweh of the Old Testament. Atheists have to decide where they stand - some few maintain Jesus didn't exist at all, others portray him as a social revolutionary. This site's view is that he was an apocalyptic prophet, preaching the end of the world. This debate will be explored further in articles coming soon.
